Whew! The big fund and friend-raising event is in the bag…all but the clean-up. It was clearly a success for us at making friends and bringing in funds. Obviously, a not for profit organization must make money to fulfill its mission….no critters come in with health insurance and someone must purchase the food, medical supplies, and other items to successfully do what we want and need to do. Periodically through the year, we take the opportunity to reach out to you to do your part to make Liberty Wildlife work. And, this weekend many of you did just that.
For that we thank you! The critters thank you. The community we serve thanks you. I thank you!
As for the friend making part of the event, we provided a number of opportunities to show you where the money that you donate goes…to the hospital, to the Non-Eagle Feather Repository, to the Education Department, to our conservation efforts, and to our LEED Platinum Sustainable building that helps us teach you how to live lightly on the earth. This event provided a springboard for us to show off. I think we did just fine and am hearing already about the new friends we have made….only two days beyond the event and new folks are reaching out. YAY!
For that we thank you! The critters thank you. The community we serve thanks you. I thank you!
This was an event with many moving parts made possible by the Wildlife Guardians with Kimberly Lake taking the lead and doing a great job. All of the participating Guardians were critical in bringing great auction items, fun games…everyone who played won, and an enlightening program. There was ALMOST too much going on but that makes for a great evening…no lulls, no boring small talk, no waste of your time. The food from M Catering was off the charts and the spirits flowed freely…just an awesome time….no kidding.
Shortly, yes, shortly, we will be revealing information on next year’s big event so that you can plan your schedule to join in on the fun. You won’t be sorry.
In the meantime watch for news about other fun and interesting opportunities to wear the colors and help Liberty Wildlife nurture the nature of Arizona.
This Week @ Liberty – Oct 22, 2018
By the time this gets posted, Wishes for Wildlife 2018 will be history. I will be off on a three week trip so some of the pictures will have to wait for TW@L on November 5th (the next time I’ll post) But this update will include some of the preparations for the big event and hopefully many of you were able to attend our main fundraiser for the year. The intakes are trickling in but still some interesting animals are arriving. Between baby barn owls and the non-stop perorations for the event, it has been a very busy, very wet October!
We just went through the rainiest October on record which was good news and bad news. The good news is, we certainly needed the rain. The cisterns out front that hold the water we use for irrigating our landscaping have filled up and will supply our foliage for months. The bad news is, we usually get an influx of animals that we don’t see often in a normal month. In this case, there are more white (fresh water) pelicans out there, and one of them turned up at Liberty. He seems to be doing well in our care and hopefully he will be released soon.

We have added a lighted fountain to the wetlands pond. Joe Miller braved some cool temperatures to anchor the fountain and the effect is quite photogenic!

At a recent public event, one of the activities was to have the kids build their own Monarch butterflies in the big classroom. Although it was somewhat of a messy project, the kids seemed to enjoy it and have a great time! Another of Laura’s innovative and educational activities that went over well with the public.

Channel 10 sent team out to Liberty recently to promote our gala event, Wishes for Wildlife. The local personalities had a great interview with Dan, Jan, and some other Liberty volunteers and wildlife ambassadors to get the word out about our event. At the intake window, we always hear that people don’t know we’re here so this type of publicity is a great thing for the organization.

Last week, two people approached the window with w box in hand. We were speculating about it probably being a pigeon or maybe a bunny, but when they got there, I saw it was a baby barn owl! Not that we don’t get a lot of baby barns each year, but NOT in late October. This little guy is either very early or very late! We’re all hoping this isn’t an omen of things to come!

This is the 25th Wishes for Wildlife event, and the first to be held at the facility. It’s a LOT of work but we’re hoping everyone who attends will have a wonderful time amongst the animals and people of Liberty Wildlife! We’ll report on the event in the next TW@L post!
