Thanksgiving is upon us, and that is kind of hard to believe. The year is flying by, and it seriously can’t be over soon enough for most people. At Thanksgiving I like to review all of the things that I am grateful for, and like past years, there are many… even in the year of COVID. The rough patches that we have all experienced have forced us to adapt even when we had to be dragged screaming and kicking to do it. I will not enumerate. But, there are some “stand outs” that I want to voice my gratitude for.
Our necessary pivot to a virtual event for Wishes for Wildlife made us realize things can be done differently and successfully. While far from perfect, we learned a great deal about what it takes to get a larger number of people from across the United States to involve themselves in our event. That was very exciting. We had “attendees” from the east coast, the west coast and all the spots in between. We had active bidding on all of the items and our silent auction out did last year’s. The number of generous donors was heart-warming, and our bottom line surpassed the last four years. So, yes, it was a nice pivot and has started our thinking towards a hybrid event next year which you will be hearing about…stay tuned.
I would be remiss if I didn’t acknowledge how grateful I am to ALL of our donors this year who stepped up to the plate with generosity and supported the care of the animals they brought to us or provided funding to replace the reduction and cancelations in our educational and event efforts. The COVID interruption has created havoc that forced us to adjust whether or not we wanted to…creating a challenge for all, but an impressive call from the heart from so many of you has made it all work.
And my gratitude continues for the ones that make it happen “on the ground”…the staff and volunteers who come in every day…including Thanksgiving…to take care of the feeding, medical needs, and stewardship of the rehabilitation and educational animals that are our daily responsibility…and a total labor of love. The people here have hearts of gold, an undying love for their work and a need to help, and who go beyond the call to make the lives better for all of these creatures in our charge. Forget politics, religion, or residence… it is our common goal that allows us to work together for our mission.
For all of these reasons I am thankful. Despite all of the ugliness of this past year, I am thankful for these people and creatures who enrich our lives and allow us the ability to live our dreams. For those of you reading this blog, thank you for following our story and helping in the many, many ways that you do to allow Liberty Wildlife to fulfill its mission 365 days a year for almost 40 years.
I personally thank each and every one of you. A Happy and Safe Thanksgiving to all of you from all of us.
This Week @ Liberty – November 25, 2020
Beginning many years ago, I started posting a year-end-review slide show of some of the memorable photos from TW@L during the previous twelve months. I’m a little early this year, but as we approach 12,000 intakes for the year, I just wanted to get a jump on things. (Plus, going to a bi-weekly format kinda messed with my timing! Please forgive me.)
I hope you enjoy this presentation of
